HI - Hilo, Hilo International Airport
We are under tsunami threat due to the large (8.8) earthquake in Chile yesterday. A nine foot wave is expected in Hilo at 11:05am PST today.
We are at 550' elevation, and 3/4 mile away from the coastal cliffs , and out of any danger area, but of course there is only one road around the island....and if it is damaged we are stranded. We are off grid-so will not lose power or water, and have one week worth of food and bottled water. Though there has been a general call for any medical personnel to try to get to the hospital for any disaster assistance, I am 22 miles from the hospital, and would not be able to get there from here due to the current road closures.
Hilo has been through this before (1949, 1960) and has made significant changes to the bayfront because of it....the vast majority of property there is now parkland, so as to reduce loss of homes and business.
Pray for the safety of the "lowlanders".....
Love, chele
***UPDATE****
There was fascinating footage of rapidly fluctuating tides: in and out, looking like rapids on a river, but changing directions every few minutes. Thankfully, no mention of damage in any part of the Hawaii (which, for the benefit of any MSNBC commentator who might read this, is part of the United States, and whose residents are......Americans....doh.)
The good news? Card game/BBQ with the kids is back on!
